(EMAILWIRE.COM, August 10, 2013 ) Calgary, Canada -- While the dentist may be a dreaded experience for many, an injection into the tissue of the mouth to numb the otherwise painful procedure has been the standard for quelling pain. However, thanks to a new study from the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine, the injections may fall to the wayside for many visitations.

Sebastian G. Ciancio, DDS, UB Distinguished Service Professor, chair of periodontics and endodontics, director of the Center of Dental Studies, along with his research team, published results from their study regarding the effectiveness and safety of nasal anesthesia spray in order to produce numbness for upper teeth. The study was approved for Phase 2 by the Food and Drug Administration.

“Injection carries several disadvantages. The most obvious is the patient’s fear of pain. But injections also carry the possibility of exposure to bloodborne pathogens via needlestick; the risk that the anesthesia may not be effective; and injury or tenderness after the procedure,” says Ciancio.

Ciancio's own research team studied 45 adults with a mean age of 39, while filling of upper teeth. There were patients who were given an intraoral lidocaine-epinephrine injection, injection along with a nasal spray, while others were given anesthetic nasal spray with a false injection.

“We constantly monitored our patients for pain and were prepared to give ‘rescue’ anesthesia to the patients with the ‘sham’ injection who needed it,” says Ciancio.

Out of the 30 patients, only five required any form of rescue anesthesia after experiencing some form of pain following the spray. Ciancio stated that the results point to the spray providing sufficient anesthesia in order to perform standard work in the area of the mouth.
