Vegetarian Diet can Sustain Runner’s Nutrient Needs

(EMAILWIRE.COM, July 29, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- A new study shows that, when athletes make a concerted effort to seek out nutrients that are often easily found in animal products can live a healthy lifestyle on a vegetarian diet.

Dilip Ghosh, director of Nutriconnect in Sydney, Australia, concluded that by targeting certain foods, athletes can still get the recommended and needed amount of protein, iron, zinc and other nutrients necessary for health and performance from a vegetarian meal plan.

Ghosh says foods that meet those requirements to avoid common deficiencies include leafy vegetables, fruits, fortified breakfast cereals, soy drinks, nuts and milk products for those vegetarians who consume dairy products.

Runner’s World Chief Running Officer, Bart Yasso and ultra runner Scott Jurek are two of the most notable present-day vegetarian athletes. Jurek is actually a vegan, and while it took him a long time to cut out things like cookies and cake, it improved his race times.

However, it’s important to remember that runners can’t simply swap out an 8-ounce glass of milk for a plant based-alternative. Skim milk has a whole 8 grams of protein per serving, while soymilk only has 6 grams, and almond milk has but one.
