(EMAILWIRE.COM, July 08, 2013 ) Ottawa, Canada -- In a new study published in medical journal PLOS ONE, more than half of participants cut down on tobacco not long after they began using e-cigarettes, and 13 percent were not smoking regular cigarettes at all a year after switching.
The study, which is the first of its kind as a clinical trial, wasnt labeled as a smoking-cessation test, but Dr. Riccardo Polosa, the lead author from University of Catania said the main message of the study was that e-cigarettes may be a good tool to control tobacco use and help smokers quit.
However, the researchers didnt compare e-cigarettes to nicotine gum or patches, so it is not known how well the device would work when compared to those items.Since there was no control group of smokers who got no e-cigarettes at all, it's hard to know how many would have quit smoking on their own by the end of a year, experts noted.
E-cigarettes went on to the market in China in 2004. Powered by rechargeable batteries, the device lets users inhale nicotine-infused vapors that dont contain many of the harmful tar and ingredients that is found in tobacco smoke.
According to Dr. Michael Siegel, who studies the use of e-cigarettes but wasnt apart of the study, the attractive part about the electronic cigarettes is that people can mimic their traditional smoking behavior, but have less impact on their own health as well as cut down on second hand smoke.
