(EMAILWIRE.COM, August 21, 2013 ) Rome, Italy -- According a study published earlier this year in the Journal of Adolescent Research, over one third of 792 adults aged from 17 to 24 reported having sex with an ex, and the numbers were higher among divorced adults.
Researchers found that sexual encounters with someone from a previous relationship helped lessen the pain divorce. However, couples who were already over their divorce found no comfort in post-divorce sex between each other and did not report such behavior.
The Daily Mail reported that psychologists believe that break-ups can leave couples with lasting attachment needs that go unfulfilled, so sex helps provide those insecurities, no matter how superficial they may be, until a new relationship or love interest comes along. The researchers on the study seemed to agree, and for the most part found it to be a healthy way of living.
However, some licensed counselors and psychologists are still yet to believe that ex-sex has any benefits. Sherry Amatenstein, a clinical social worker, warns against any type of sexual encounter with an ex, because she believes it only leads to a drawn-out break up.
