Unfortunately, chemotherapy does result in hair loss in the majority of patients, but researchers are diligently working to find solutions that would prevent or lessen the effects of hair loss. One such treatment is by using a cap during radiation and chemo that keep the head and hair at 41 degrees Fahrenheit.
The cap helps to slow down blood flow to the scalp, reducing the amount of chemotherapy that reaches the top of the head and destroys hairs. The caps are already commonly used in Europe and Canada, but they arent approved by the FDA in the US. However, is the US trials seem to work well enough, they could become approved and be eligible for coverage under insurance policies.

The major US trial will begin on early-stage breast cancer patients, and will begin late this summer or early fall. The Associated Press reported that there is no set time frame for the study.
