Bigger Meals Early in the Day May Help Aid Weight Loss

(EMAILWIRE.COM, August 11, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- From June to October 2012, researchers at the University of Tel Aviv separated 93 women into two groups. The first group was told to eat a large breakfast of 700 calories, a lunch of 500 calories, and a dinner of 200 calories. The other group was given opposite instructions. They were to eat 200 calories at breakfast, 500 during lunch and 700 at dinner time.

Every two weeks, the women were measured for various different and metabolic markers. They were given the diet as well as encouraged to exercise on a regular basis. At the end of the study, women who had been assigned to the bigger breakfast group had lost an average of 19.1 pounds, while the big dinner group had only lost an average of 7.9 pounds.

The researchers noted that levels of glucose, insulin and ghrelin all decreased significantly in both groups but to a greater extent in big breakfast subjects. The big breakfast group also had significantly lower glucose and insulin responses in post-lunch blood tests, suggesting that eating a relatively high-calorie breakfast helped to maintain stable insulin levels after the second meal of the day.
