(EMAILWIRE.COM, July 30, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- David Cameron's "op-in" porn restrictions and bans on certain types of material has been heralded as a success by some. The director started hard out of the gate several years ago by campaigning on the subject is being underlined by Cameron using the Sunday Times and Psychologies magazine .
The problem with the want for banning of such material is that the terminology for what it is they want band is vague. At no point in the campaign has Cameron or his campaign stated what it is they seek to ban. Historically, the line of pornography and art has been blurred, and the concept of 'over-the-line porn' and just plane old porn is also difficult to gain consensus on.
There are already particular types of porn that are no legal. New regulations on consensual and 'role-play' type of material is not only a tough sell for those campaigning, but is also tough to find consensus and hard lines to draw.
Another large problem seems to be than the campaign assumes only men will opt-in to porn. There is a long standing misconception that only men are interested in pornography. It would not be surprising if many people assume that only men would watch the more hardcore pornography as well.
That misconception ought be under fire following the successes of Fifty Shades of Grey. Females are also searching for Google terms such as "sex toys", "XXX videos" and "sex" at
nearly the same rate as men. Women were even found to be more likely than men to type in words into search such as "adult sex", "free sex," and "cyber sex".
All that said, the campaign by Cameron is certainly coming from a positive place, but seems generally misguided. It is a sort of protection of women that steps a bit far into the censorship category, and thus ends up missing its mark in general. Having to input an ID for pornography will not deter men or women from looking at pornography, and seems like an unnecessary and awkward step. It both asks to remove anonymity, which individuals have a right to, while also not making it any more difficult to access such material.
