(EMAILWIRE.COM, June 26, 2013 ) Rome, Italy -- Analysis recently released in the Journal of Sexual Medicine has noted that the number of men under the mid-age who suffer from erectile dysfunction is higher than previously thought.
The affliction, known as impotence or ED, is defined by an inability to sustain an erection for sufficient sexual intercourse. The primary treatment thus far has been with drugs such as Viagra, Cialis, or other ED drugs. The pills are often targeted to men over the age of 40.
According to the latest research presented at the 28 Annual EAU Congress, the prevalence of ED amongst younger patients is more prevalent than first thought. Many of younger men do not seek treatment, believing the medications available is for older men only.
The previous research that was lead by physician-scientists from various medical centers noted that 65% of men with ED cannot reach orgasm, while 58% experience trouble ejaculating.
Many of those who suffer from erectile dysfunction are over 40, stemming from the basic increase in age. However, the risk of ED among younger men has been wholly ignored by major medical studies. Researchers have now identified that nearly 25% of those who suffer from ED are younger men .
Dr. Paolo Capogrosso of the University Vita-Salute San Raffaele in Milan, Italy, along with his team, looked at 439 men who sought medical help due to ED at an outpatient clinic between 2010-2012. Of those over 400 men, 114 of the men were under the age of 40.
Said Dr. Capogrosso of the issue: "These findings, taken together with those of other studies showing the importance of erectile dysfunction as a potential "sentinel marker" of major diseases, outline the importance of taking a comprehensive medical and sexual history and to perform a thorough physical examination in all men with erectile dysfunction, irrespective of their age."
