Demonstration of an Effective Exercise for Toning Legs and Hips With Resistance Bands

(EMAILWIRE.COM, July 16, 2013 ) Rochester, Wisconsin -- "Everything in moderation." Plato had a thing about finding the middle ground. Many people who worry about their weight but do not love hard workouts may be glad to hear that the benefits of moderation extend also to exercise routines. Recently, University of Copenhagen researchers did a study that seems to show that moderate rather than strenuous exercise may be more effective for losing weight.

The study followed 61 moderately overweight male subjects and put them into three groups: a control group that stayed sedentary with no dietary or exercise routine changes; a second group that did moderate exercise of up to 30 minutes a day (each participant worked out for either the half hour or until he had burned off 300 calories); a third group that worked out harder, for 60 minutes a day or until they had burned off 600 calories.

At the end of the 13-week test, the sedentary group unsurprisingly experienced no weight changes. The men in the high-intensity exercise group lost on average 5 lbs, about 20% less than researchers expected considering how many calories they were burning. On the other hand, the moderate exercisers lost 7 lbs. each on average, 83% more than what the researchers anticipated based on calorie expenditure alone.

How could this be? Researchers theorize that the most active group overcompensated with more eating after their workouts (the men kept a record of what they ate during the experiment). The most active group also were more sedentary when they were not exercising, probably due to fatigue, and spent the majority of their non-exercise time sitting. The moderate exercisers by contrast were more active when not exercising, moving more in general. "It was little things, but they add up," according to lead researcher Mags Rosenkilde.

Individuals that work out less may wind up expending just enough calories to lose weight, but not so many as to feel an urge to replace those calories, either by eating more or sitting around due to fatigue. However, people who exercise a lot may feel more exhausted, which leads them to overcompensate with more food and more sedentary activities.

SLEEK-TONE spokesman Brian Macoun says that his customers often report benefits from even casual workouts far from any gym with his company's RESISTANCE BANDS . "I'm amazed at how many people tell me they work out with our bands sitting or standing in front of the TV", Macoun said. "They say they'll do a series of resistance loop exercises while watching a 30-minute sitcom and feel really energized afterward. They themselves seem surprised at how much they get out of even easygoing workouts like that with EXERCISE BANDS. That's not my personal vision of a workout, but hey, whatever works!"

So, with apologies to Plato, one path to weight loss may be expressed as "Everything in moderation, and whatever works."
