(EMAILWIRE.COM, April 23, 2014 ) Spokane, WA -- The Zharmae Publishing Press Imprint, Porfirio Press, is thrilled about the upcoming publication of Gerald Beckman's novel, The Family. This novel is due out for publication on June 12, 2014.

About the book

Jay Marc Rhodes is a burned-out, renegade layer who sees a last chance to make a professional comeback by hiring Aaron Arredondo, a nontraditional associate who has access to a decidedly nontraditional source of business. Jay is not particularly bothered by the fact that the majority of Aaron's clients are heavily involved in trafficking drugs, but as time goes by he sees there is something odd about Aaron's clients. They're all part of the same family, and what's more, Aaron is part of the family. When Jay confronts Aaron with his suspicion that Aaron is more than the family lawyer, that he is in fact aiding and abetting the family's criminal enterprise, Aaron sidesteps the issue and begins a course of action designed to persuade Jay to help him represent the family's interests.

Jay finds the temptation of great wealth impossible to reject outright, but because Aaron's involvement with his family is so lucrative even without Jay's contribution, he cannot bring himself to fire Aaron either.

What Jay doesn't know, or even suspects until the very end, is that Aaron's ultimate goal involves much more than helping his family, even more than becoming a successful and wealthy lawyer, but by then events have spiraled beyond control.

The resolution of these conflicts leads the two lawyers along a convoluted path littered with official corruption, murder, kidnapping, and torture, and in the end, a rare act of revenge that changes the lives of all who survive.

The Family is due out for publication on June 12, 2014.

About the author

Gerald Beckman was born and raised on a farm in the Panhandle of West Texas. His first eight years of schooling took place in a one-room schoolhouse in Umbarger, a small German farming community located about 30 miles southwest of Amarillo. The entire student body, including high school, consisted of about 70 students. Three Catholic nuns taught all 12 grades but managed to produce one of the best writers of our time.

After middle school, Beckman's parents sent him to a small boarding school in Worthington, Ohio, after which he returned to Texas to attend college at the University of Texas in Austin and then later law school at the University of Houston. In 1966, he began a wide ranging trial practice, and 25 years later decided to devote the rest of his life doing the things he loved best-writing, reading, walking, and biking cross-country in the U.S. and abroad, and visiting with friends and neighbors any time the opportunity arises. As a source of pure enjoyment, nothing beats a spirited discussion about politics, world affairs, or a good book, while sampling an unfamiliar cabernet with a small group of friends.
