(EMAILWIRE.COM, February 27, 2014 ) Bakersfield, CA -- People’s propensity to get involved in accidents and suffer injuries is inevitable. Vehicular accidents injure millions and kill thousands of people in the US each year. Drugged driving has been an increasing concern during the past few years. Fatal crashes associated with marijuana use tripled during the previous decade, causing some increase in drugged-driving traffic deaths, according to a study from Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health.

“Currently, one of nine drivers involved in fatal crashes would test positive for marijuana,” said Dr. Gouha Li, director of the Center for Injury Epidemiology and Prevention at Columbia, and co-author of the study. Researchers from the said university gathered pieces of data from different states - California, Hawaii, Illinois, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and West Virginia. These states routinely conduct toxicology tests on drivers involved in deadly car accidents. This included over 23,500 drivers who died within one hour of a crash between 1999 and 2010.

According to the study, drugs proved to be one of the causes of fatal vehicular collisions. Results of toxicological testing on drivers implied that marijuana was observed in all age groups and both sexes. In addition, marijuana was detected increasingly in fatally injured drivers.

“This study shows an alarming increase in driving under the influence of drugs, and, in particular, it shows an increase in driving under the influence of both alcohol and drugs,” said Jan Withers, national president of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD). She also emphasized that while drugged driving and drunk driving involve different substances, the formidable outcome results in needless deaths and injuries. Vehicular accidents are 100 percent preventable, that is why MADD is concerned about the increase in impaired driving, she added.

While these accidents are irreversible, personal injury law offers a way for the injured to be consoled and given justice. A personal injury lawyer, specializing in auto accidents help support a victim throughout the judicial process and help assess if the accident was caused by negligence of the driver or triggered by faulty car parts. Lawsuits for such injuries are often settled out of court, before the court reaches a verdict, although there are cases wherein a judge’s verdict is appropriate. An auto accident lawyer makes sure the right reports and medical records are in order, helps review the auto policy and assists with the auto accident claim.
