(EMAILWIRE.COM, July 07, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- On July 1 the city of West Hollywood prepped for a day full of weddings.
Along Santa Monica Boulevard one could see flashing traffic signs reading Wedding Parking. In front of the West Hollywood City Council chambers, a large party equipment truck was stationed ready for the revelers.
The morning was spent by city staffers setting up tents and testing the speakers in anticipation of a packed day of weddings. The city provided free wedding ceremonies on Monday after the five-year ban on same-sex weddings was overturned by the Supreme Court.
Those who had a marriage license from the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk were eligible for a free ceremony between 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the West Hollywood Library.
One couple from Northridge, Pat Joyce and Anne Morrison, arrived early at the West Hollywood City Council chambers in anticipation of the ceremonies. Ms. Morrison held a yellow folder with their wedding license, which had just been obtained. For 26 years the couple have been together after having met at a paddle tennis tournament.
In 2008 they missed their window to get married before Proposition 8 went into effect. After the ban they became domestic partners, but are now thrilled to be getting legally married.
They said that this ceremony was only to fulfill legal obligations. In the coming months, they will have a ceremony to celebrate with family and friends.
The couple made sure to arrive by 8:45 a.m. so as not to take any chances. Having missed their window in 2008, they made sure to be the first in line this time.
Dozens of people sat in the crowd outside and applauded for each couple who left with a marriage license. The court bailiffs tried to keep the crowd quiet, but did so with smiles on their faces.
