(EMAILWIRE.COM, July 04, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- N.C. Hunter was one of Englands best-known playwrights in the post World War II era of the 1950s. His plays captured the British middle-class anxieties of loss and uncertainty that were a direct result of the war. One of the playwrights first productions, "A Picture of Autumn," is being featured at the Mint Theater May 23, 2013 through July 27, 2013. The play is being directed by Gus Kaikkonen.
In a one-night 'try-out' performance on February 11, 1951, "A Picture of Autumn" made its debut at the Duke of York's Theatre in London. However, the play was not picked-up after its try-out and has since faded into obscurity. Two months after the failed try out at the Duke of York's Theatre, Hunters production Waters of the Moon opened at the Theatre Royal in London. Waters of the Moon ran for eight hundred and thirty-five performances making Hunter an overnight success.
Very few of Hunters productions have graced American theaters since "A Day by the Sea" played on Broadway in 1955. Although "A Picture of Autumn" never made it into the London limelight, it is impressive in every way. The quiet intelligence of director Gus Kaikkonen has coaxed this rare gem into its proper setting. The Mint's staging is so powerful it may just spark a revival of interest in Mr. Hunter's work. Complete with a winding staircase and elaborately appointed living room, Winton Manor has been downsized onto the stage of Mint's tiny 100-seat theater by set designer Charles Morgan.
"A Picture of Autumn" is a comedy that was written to lighten the anxieties of loss and uncertainty of post war Brits. However, many modern day Americans face the same anxieties when it comes to their aging parents. Sixty years have gone by since Mr. Hunter sat down and wrote "A Picture of Autumn." The world has moved on and technology has advanced but those same primal fears remain. The play may be an old distraction from those fears but it still works.
