(EMAILWIRE.COM, July 03, 2013 ) Miami, FL -- A recent clinical study on the sexual side effects of the drug finasteride (Propecia), inadvertently found that it reduced some of the mens interest in drinking alcohol. The clinical study is being conducted at the George Washington University School of Medicine in Washington DC.
Propecia is prescribed to slow a receding hairline in men who are going bald. Dr. Michael Irwig, endocrinologist and assistant professor of medicine at the school said, Almost two-thirds of the men in the study noticed they were drinking less alcohol than before taking Propecia. Finasteride, when prescribed in higher doses, is also used to treat an enlarged prostate. It is sold as Proscar for this purpose.
Like the drugs multiple uses, it also has multiple side effects, which might not be the same in all men. The cause for some of these side effects may not even be the drug itself but other traits the men have in common. The study is being conducted to gain a better understanding of the sexual side effects of men taking Propecia.
Currently, the research is being conducted only on younger men, ages 46 and under, who have stopped taking the drug for at least three months. They discontinued using the drug because they were experiencing erectile dysfunction and reduced sex drive. The men are still suffering from these side effects even though they have stopped taking the drug.
As far as the reduced alcohol consumption is concerned, Irwig suspects the drug inhibits the brains capability to produce hormones called neurosteroids. These hormones are most likely linked in some way to the consumption of alcohol. This effect has also shown up in male mice, in a study that was published in the online journal, Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research, on June 13.
In Irwigs study, he followed 83 healthy men ages 21 to 46. These men still have persistent sexual side effects after they stopped taking Propecia. Most of the men have had the side effects for a year or more. Before starting the hair loss treatment, 63 of these healthy men reported drinking at least one alcoholic beverage a week. After taking Propecia, 65 percent of them said they cut back on alcohol consumption.
